American Substance Abuse Profesionals

About American Substance Abuse Professional, Inc.

ASAP has deep roots that reach back through a rich history of service and innovation. ASAP traces its beginnings to 1973 and the debut of a breakthrough drug abuse treatment program that was co-founded in Baltimore , Maryland by ASAP CEO and President, Reed Morrison, Ph.D. The Savitria Program, later re-named The Janus Center, became the nation’s first state certified alternative treatment program, using art therapy, dance therapy, music therapy, and meditation, psychodrama and gestalt therapy in an intensive outpatient group therapy format. Dr. Morrison directed the program for ten years, pioneering treatment modalities that have since made their ways into the mainstream.

With the advent of the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) concept in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, new opportunities arose to deliver innovative services to the workplace. In 1984, the Janus Center was re-invented to become Janus Associates EAP, a new regional service for helping troubled employees. Janus Associates EAP, under the directorship of Dr. Morrison, served local employers and offered affiliate services, representing national EAPs in the Mid-Atlantic area. The original drug abuse treatment program continues to operate in Baltimore , renamed Treatment Resources for Youth (TRY).

In 1987, Janus Associates EAP began providing substance abuse evaluations for local employers with policies for administering drug/alcohol tests to safety-sensitive employees. The evaluation, reporting and follow-up procedures all but mirrored the current Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations. When the DOT issued its 1995 mandate for initiating Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) services, Janus Associates EAP was experienced and ready to take on the challenge. However, it was not long before significant problems emerged. It became clear, as demand for SAP services grew, that SAP services were highly specialized and could not be adequately delivered by an EAP. Role conflicts, procedural differences and ethical ambiguities made the dual delivery of EAP and SAP services confusing, cumbersome and all but impossible. This dilemma precipitated the birth of American Substance Abuse Professionals, Inc. (ASAP), spun-off from Janus Associates EAP in January of 1999. Since 1999, ASAP’s sole mission has been the delivery of comprehensive SAP compliance services.

Over the years, ASAP has listened to its customers. They were frustrated. They were losing time and money juggling multiple vendors who were supposed to be keeping their companies drug-free. Their patchwork of programs were missing accountability, coordination and communication. In response, ASAP SolutiOneSM Drug-Free Workplace and Compliance Services was born. ASAP SolutiOneSM is a “one system” approach for managing Drug-Free Workplace Programs (DFWPs ) with efficiency, high performance and cost effectiveness. ASAP SolutiOneSM creates company substance abuse policies, provides employee testing, MRO and test notification services and delivers comprehensive SAP evaluation and aftercare services. One vendor, One phone call, One solution.

Today, ASAP’s mission is the delivery of comprehensive drug-free workplace and compliance services built upon the highest standards of quality assurance, regulatory compliance and customer care. Plus, ASAP services are no longer limited to DOT-mandated companies! They are for all employers who seek to promote and maintain a Drug-Free Workplace

We are proud of who we are, where we have been and where we are going. We know that the ASAP story will continue to be written by each company and each person we are privileged to serve.
